More than a third of the population of Europe was wiped out. Europe suffered additional outbreaks of plague in the 14th century but recovered slowly. In France new market oriented towns called bastides were established in attempts to generate revenue for the king and to resettle areas that had been depopulated by the plague. Economic progress continued in France, Italy, Germany, Flanders, and England, leading to the growth of industry, trade, and banking that is sometimes called the commercial revolution. This economic expansion continued through the Renaissance, a period characterized particularly by a flowering of the arts and sciences. The development of international trade and the exchange of ideas across cultures during the Renaissance further expanded the size, importance, and influence of cities. The Renaissance also led to new architectural styles in European cities, particularly in Italy. The great economic and cultural shift called the Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 18th century and from there spread to other parts of the world. City populations exploded during this period, which marked the transition from mostly agricultural economies to those dominated by machine based manufacturing. The Industrial Revolution had its roots in another major transitionthe agricultural revolution. Earlier in the 18th century wealthy British landowners had taken advantage of poor peasants with the enclosure movement, in which they fenced off formerly communal lands and turned them over to private ownership.

This is the narrowest way in which you can grasp Marxs argument. But he sees it as having even wider implications than this. The relations of material production not only limit the rest of relations in society, they are also the source of the content of these wider relations as well. The history of society is the history of changes in the ways in which production takes place, each associated with changes in the relations between human beings immediately around the productive process. And these changes in turn then exert a pressure on all the other social relations. If, for instance, a band of hunter gatherers adopts a me of radically increasing the food available to them by, say planting root vegetables for themselves instead of having search for them and of storing food for long periods of time for instance, in earthenware pots, this necessarily changes their social relations with each other.
